The English Ball is St. George’s Society of New York’s annual fundraising gala to support SGSNY’s charitable mission providing critical support services in our local community. It is an opportunity to be together, celebrate and recognize distinguished members of the Anglo-American and Commonwealth communities.

Amanda is the Chief Executive Officer of 100 Women in Finance. She leads a staff team and provides direction to 500 volunteer practitioners globally. The organization, which has registered members in 28 locations, is focused on empowering women in the finance industry and inspiring the next generation of pre-career young women.

Amanda is a former principal of Aquamarine Capital Management, where she was responsible, over a period of seven years, for managing marketing, investor relations and back office administration for two private investment funds.

Amanda is Chair and Non Executive Director of the Board of FlyPlymouth, based in Plymouth, UK. She also serves on the Boards of the HALO Trust (USA), the American Friends of The National Portrait Gallery (London) Foundation and as a Director on the Oxford University Alumni Board. She is Vice Chair of the Women’s Network Forum and an Advisory Board Member of the Harambe Entrepreneur Alliance (Harambe).

Previously, she served as Chairman of the Board of The HALO Trust and served on the Board of Langone NYU Cancer Institute. She was on the founding Board of 100 Women in Finance, serving as its President for two years. She is a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Amanda graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford University in 1987 with an Honours Degree in Modern History. She earned an MBA from La Salle University, Philadelphia, in 1998, and received the Academic Award for MBA student of the year as well as the Beta Gamma Sigma designation.

The Medal of Honor was established to recognize those who have rendered exemplary service to British interests and/or the international community at large.

It is with a heavy heart that we have made the difficult decision to cancel St. George’s Society of New York’s 250th Anniversary English Ball. This difficult decision was made out of deep concern for the health and well-being of our community at large, and with the full support of our Board of Directors, the honorees and our Presenting Sponsor, Aon.

The Duke of Gloucester Lifetime Achievement Award

Greg Case is Chief Executive Officer of Aon plc, a leading global professional services firm providing a broad range of risk, retirement and health solutions. He is also a member of the company’s Board of Directors.

Before joining Aon, he served on the governing Shareholders’ Council at McKinsey & Company, a leading international management consultant, and led their Global Insurance and Financial Services Practice. Prior to McKinsey, he worked for the investment banking firm of Piper, Jaffray and Hopwood and at the Federal Reserve Bank.

Case holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and graduated summa cum laude from Kansas State University. He serves on the boards of Discover Financial Services, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, Field Museum of Natural History, CEO’s Against Cancer and St. John’s University School of Risk Management. Case was named by the Harvard Business Review as one of the top 100 best performing CEOs in the world in 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2014.

The Duke of Gloucester Lifetime Achievement Award is a one-time award recognizing an individual who, over their lifetime, through business and philanthropic efforts and by embracing diversity, has enriched the lives of others in communities and cultures across the globe.

William R. Miller CBE
Medal of Honor

A noted philanthropist and longtime supporter of St. George’s Society, William R. Miller CBE served as President from 2001 to 2003 and remains a member of the Society’s Advisory Council. Under his presidency, the Society founded what is now the Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden—of which he is Chairman Emeritus.

After graduating from St. Edmund Hall, Oxford University, in 1952, Miller joined Pfizer in the UK and remained with them until 1964 when he became Overseas Resident Manager for Europe for Bristol Laboratories—later Bristol Myers-Squibb. He transferred to the US from Europe in 1966 and from 1980 to 1989, Mr. Miller held worldwide executive responsibility for Bristol-Myers' pharmaceutical and nutritional businesses before retiring as Vice Chairman in 1991.

As an industry leader, Miller was active in the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association in the 1980's, serving as Chairman in 1986-1987. Between 1991 and 2009, he has served on the board of several biotechnology companies and is a past Chairman of the Board of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory—now an Honorary Trustee.

He is currently Chairman of the American Fund for Westminster Abbey, a Board member of Americans for Oxford, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and an Advisory Director of the Metropolitan Opera.  He has served on the boards of a wide variety of organizations including the English-Speaking Union, St. Paul’s Cathedral Trust in America, Manhattan School of Music, and Opera Orchestra of New York.  He has served on the Vestry of Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue.

In 2000, he was appointed Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty The Queen for services to British charities in the US, then subsequently appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services to UK/USA relations in business and philanthropy in 2011.

He was also appointed Knight of Justice in the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in 2001.

Mr. Miller was married to the late Irene Diaman Miller for almost forty years until her passing in 2015. He has three children from his first marriage and two stepchildren. Mr. Miller resides in New York City.

The Medal of Honor was established to recognize those who have rendered exemplary service to British interests and/or the international community at large.

Martin Johnson CBE
Anglo-American Cultural Award

Martin Johnson CBE regarded as one of the greatest rugby players ever to have played the game—having represented and captained Leicester, England and the British Lions in a career spanning 16 seasons.

Johnson made his debut for the Leicester Tigers in 1989 and for England in 1993. In 1997,

he was named as captain for the victorious British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa, and then in 2001, became the first man to captain the Lions twice as he led the 2001 tour to Australia.

He became England captain in 1999, and subsequently led the team to win the 6 Nations Grand Slam in 2003 becoming the only captain from the Northern Hemisphere to win the Rugby World Cup. That memorable final was his 84th and final international match. Following this victory, he was awarded the CBE and placed second in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

During his club career he played 362 games for Leicester and captained the club as they won the 1997 Pilkington Cup, four consecutive Premiership titles between 1999-2002 and two European Cup titles in 2001 and 2002. He served as the England team manager from 2008 to 2011. Under his management, England won the 2011 Six Nations Championship, their first since 2003. That same year, he was inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame at the World Rugby Awards alongside all other Rugby World Cup-winning captains and head coaches from the tournament.

Andy Byford
British Leadership Award

Andy Byford was appointed President of New York City Transit (NYCT) in January 2018.  NYCT is the largest transit agency in North America, with almost 8 million daily riders.

Prior to joining NYCT, Byford was Chief Executive Officer of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), where he led the third largest transit agency in North America, Canada’s largest transit agency, carrying over 540 million riders per year on bus, streetcar, light rail, subway and para-transit services.  As CEO, he initiated a comprehensive modernization of the TTC, a program that culminated in the TTC being recognized by the American Public Transportation Association as the Outstanding Transit System of the year for 2017.

From 2009 to 2011, as Chief Operating Officer of Rail Corporation, Sydney, Australia, he delivered service to a million customers a day on Australia’s largest transit network.  From 2003 to 2009, he held the positions of Operations Director and Operations and Safety Director with Southern Railway and South Eastern Trains Limited, UK. 

During his tenure with London Underground from 1989 to 2003, he held a variety of managerial positions including Group Station Manager, Kings Cross and General Manager–Customer Service for three of the busiest subway lines.

Originally from Plymouth, Byford is a graduate of the University of Leicester from which he was awarded a B.A. joint honours degree in French and German.  He also holds a Diploma in Transport from the University of London and is a member of the Institute of Railway Operators.

Bob Dudley
Medal of Honor

This year’s English Ball will honor Bob Dudley with the Medal of Honor in recognition of his commitment to the transatlantic business community. Bob Dudley became Chief Executive of BP in 2010. He joined the oil and gas industry in 1979 and has held a variety of engineering, commercial and strategy posts in the US, the UK, Russia and China.

In 2009, Dudley was appointed to the BP Board with accountability for the Americas and Asia.

From 2003 to 2008 Dudley served as President and CEO of TNK-BP in Moscow.

Following BP’s sale of TNK-BP in Russia and acquisition of ~20% of Rosneft, he joined the Rosneft board in 2013.

Previous executive roles include Alternative and Renewable Energy activities and responsibilities for BP’s upstream business in Russia, the Caspian region and Africa and BP’s Gulf Coast Restoration activities.

Dudley’s external roles include membership of various Business Councils and Advisory Boards and he chairs the Oil & Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI). He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Dudley has a Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois, a Masters in International Management from Thunderbird School of Global Management and an MBA from Southern Methodist University.


Tim Marlow
Anglo-American Cultural Award

Tim Marlow will receive the Anglo-American Cultural Award for his significant impact on international arts and culture. Marlow is Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Arts. Joining the Academy in 2014 as Director of Artistic Programmes, he became Artistic Director the following year. He oversees six departments from the RA’s exhibition programme to Collections, Learning, Academic Programmes, Publishing and Architecture. Prior to his appointment at the Royal Academy, Marlow was Director of Exhibitions at White Cube for over 10 years (2003-2014).

Marlow has been involved in the contemporary art world for the past twenty-five years as curator, writer and broadcaster. Having trained as an art historian, he has also worked with many of the most important and influential artists of our time including, Ai Weiwei Hon RA, Antony Gormley RA, Damien Hirst, Theaster Gates, Anselm Kiefer Hon RA, Tacita Dean RA, Cerith Wyn Evans, Tracey Emin RA, Gilbert & George RA, Julie Mehretu, Doris Salcedo and Mark Bradford.

Marlow is an award-winning radio and television broadcaster who has presented over 100 documentaries on British television and has presented programmes on BBC Radio since 1993. He was the founder editor of Tate magazine and is the author of numerous books and catalogues. He has lectured, chaired and participated in panel discussions on art and culture across the globe. His scholar’s perspective along with his humour and vim make him one of the most influential people in the art world.

Marlow sits on the Board of Trustees for the Imperial War Museum, Sadler’s Wells, Artichoke, Art on the Underground Advisory Board, The British School at Rome and Cultureshock Media.

Anglo-American Cultural Award

The first two-time MLS Golden Boot winner, Bradley Wright-Phillips turned himself into an elite finisher in MLS, and has banked arguably the greatest forward season in MLS history. Wright-Phillips joined the New York Red Bulls halfway through the 2013 season, helping them to the Supporters' Shield, and in his first full season he equaled the league's record for most goals in a single campaign with 27. He currently holds the New York Red Bulls record for most goals scored. Wright-Phillips’ father, Ian Wright MBE—a football legend in his own right—will be joining us to present the award on 29th November at Edison Ballroom.


Gareth Jones
British Leadership Award

Gareth is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of FinTech Collective a leading sector-focused venture capital firm, based in New York City and investing globally. Prior to becoming a venture capitalist, Gareth was a successful entrepreneur and business leader who helped build and sell three category leading fintech companies. These included Multex which IPO’d and then successfully sold to Reuters, Serverside which successfully sold to Gemalto, a European digital security company and CardLab which was successfully acquired by Blackhawk Networks a global leader in prepaid gift, reward and incentive technologies and solutions.

Before starting his career in FinTech, Gareth spent three years ‘double handing’ a 36-foot sailing boat 33,000 nautical miles from the UK to the Antarctic circle in search of inaccessible mountains to climb. Gareth has completed Columbia Business School’s Senior Executive Program and graduated from the University of the West of England with a BSc. Honours degree.

Gareth lives in Brooklyn with his wife, an accomplished ceramicist, and their two teenage daughters.

Glaser is President and Chief Executive Officer of Marsh & McLennan Companies, a global professional services firm offering advice and solutions in risk, strategy and people. An industry veteran, he was named Chairman of the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance (FACI) in August 2014. He also serves on the Steering Committee of the Insurance Development Forum and the International Advisory Board of BritishAmerican Business. He is a member of the Board of Trustees for The Institutes and Ohio Wesleyan University, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Partnership for New York City.

 

 

Lady Weatherstone
Order of St. George's Society

Lady Weatherstone will receive the Order of St. George’s Society for her philanthropic support of UK/US institutions and her service in the furtherance of St. George’s Society’s mission. Lady Weatherstone is the widow of Sir Dennis Weatherstone, KBE, former Chairman of J.P. Morgan. Sir Dennis was the first Chairman of St. George’s Society’s Advisory Council and served in this capacity from 2005 to 2008. The Weatherstone family’s influence on St. George’s Society has been far-reaching, from initiating and chairing the Advisory Council to leading the 2007 Capital Campaign.

Lady Weatherstone is a keen tennis player and serves as a Governor for the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

2017 HONOREE
Paula Radcliffe, MBE

This year’s British Bash will honor legendary British athlete, Paula Radcliffe, MBE, who will receive the Anglo-American Cultural Award. A three-time winner of the London Marathon, three-time New York Marathon champion and 2002 Chicago Marathon winner, Radcliffe was awarded an MBE in June 2002 and, later that year, was voted the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year.
